Africa’s Zambezi River Basin Region represents one of the largest freshwater catchments in the entire world. The Zambezi River, well known for its iconic Victoria Falls, is one of the most diverse and valuable natural resources in Africa. Its waters are critical to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction in the region. Overall, an estimated 47 million people live within the river basin. They are almost all dependent on rain-fed agriculture.
With a changing climate the region has emerging risks of drought, reduced surface water availability, decreased rainfed crop yields, flood risk, and decreased hydropower generation.
CIF is investing in Africa’s Zambezi River Basin Region through our only Nature, People, and Climate regional program. It covers Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, and Tanzania, in southern and eastern Africa. The region’s objectives are to preserve the environmental integrity of the larger Zambezi basin; maintain valuable ecosystem services that support regional food security and drive economic development; and build local communities’ resilience.
