Picture of Dominica

Dominica

Dominica, located at the center of the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, is approximately 750.6 square kilometers (sq km). The country is vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, floods and landslides, and hurricanes. Located near the eastern margin of the Caribbean plate and its eight volcanoes, Dominica is considered to be the most geologically active island in the Caribbean. With the island’s steep terrain, landslides and flash floods are common. Hurricanes afflicting the country will become stronger due to sea-level rises from climate change.

INVESTING IN DOMINICA

Picture of Dominica

CIF’s investment in Dominica is through its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR). Dominica is one of six Caribbean island nations participating in a regional PPCR program to improve climate data collection, analysis and sharing, and pilot innovative climate resilient initiatives.

Dominica's development of its own strategic program for climate resilience under PPCR has led to the formulation of the country's Low Carbon Climate Resilient Development Strategy. It sets out clearly defined goals and activities for mainstreaming climate change within the national development planning process.

The country’s $21-million PPCR investment plan aims to reduce nationwide vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change impacts, such as flooding and landslides, through climate-proofing infrastructures, as well as improving climate data collection and monitoring systems.
