The Dominican Republic is a small island developing state with coastlines on the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola; with Haiti in the remaining western one third. The Dominican Republic is generally mountainous, with pine forests in elevated areas and deserts in the extreme western regions. Some regions are known for excellent soil quality, with fertile valleys in the central and eastern areas.
According to the World Bank, the Dominican Republic is working to strengthen its society, decarbonize its economy, protect its environment and natural resources, and promote climate change adaptation. For example, the country has put forward climate resilience, low-carbon coastal urban development, improved ecosystem and landscape rehabilitation and forestry initiatives. Identified key adaptation priority sectors include agriculture and energy.
