Picture of Liberia

Liberia

Liberia, situated at the center of the Upper Guinea Rainforest Region, is bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and the Atlantic Ocean. With climate change likely to produce extreme weather in West Africa, Liberia is expected to experience heavy rains, storm surges, sea-level rises, and increased erosion in the heavily populated parts of the coast. The country’s vulnerability is exacerbated by its high level of poverty, high dependence on climate change-sensitive sectors, and engagement in unsustainable economic activities.

INVESTING IN LIBERIA

Picture of Liberia

CIF’s investment in Liberia is through its Scaling up Renewable Energy Program. Liberia’s $48-million investment plan aims to support efforts to increase energy access through off-grid electricity solutions in order to supplement the expansion of centralized generation and transmission facilities. Some 360,000 people (nine percent of the country’s population) living outside of the capital city are expected to benefit from the development of mini-grids and standalone renewable energy services.
