Picture of Mongolia

Mongolia

Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia, characterized by vast steppe plains and deserts. Covering an area of 1,564,116 square kilometers (sq km), it is bordered by Russia and China. The country is especially vulnerable to droughts, particularly the dry summers followed by cold winters, which can be severe, and result in the loss of millions of livestock. The country’s vulnerability is exacerbated by a sizable proportion of the population’s dependence on agriculture and livestock herding for their livelihoods and subsistence.

investing in mongolia

Picture of Mongolia

CIF’s investment in Mongolia is through its Scaling up Renewable Energy Program (SREP). In line with its comprehensive renewable energy action plan, Mongolia's $30-million SREP investment plan aims to improve its energy security and reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels. In particular, it is supporting the development of 25 megawatts of wind and solar photovoltaic power in the remote western region of Mongolia.

By demonstrating the application of renewable energy generation in remote areas, the investment plan aims to build a track record and scale up. It also seeks to encourage private-sector investments in utility scale renewable energy by encouraging regulation reforms and building stakeholder capacity.
