Picture of Uganda

Uganda

Uganda, straddling both the northern and southern hemispheres, is a landlocked country located in East Africa. Occupying approximately 241,500 square kilometers (sq km), the country is bordered by Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Dem. Rep. of Congo. Uganda has, over the past decades, experienced more erratic rainfalls, leading to the frequent busting of rivers, mudslides and landslides. With 17 percent of the country covered by water and swampland, those in lowlands are especially at risk of floods. Prolonged dry seasons are also frequent.

Investing in Uganda

Picture of Uganda

CIF’s investments in Uganda are through its Scaling up Renewable Energy Program (SREP), Clean Technology Fund (CTF), Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR), and Forest Investment Program (FIP) to accelerate action in priority areas. Uganda’s $50-million SREP investment plan is aimed at enhancing the enabling environment and catalyzing investments in geothermal power, solar photovoltaic net-metering, mini-grids, and wind power.

The country’s FIP investment plan and PPCR’s strategic program for climate resilience serve as roadmaps for systematically mitigating and managing climate change impacts. They detail how Uganda aims to mainstream climate resilience into development planning, employ a landscape approach to address forest loss and degradation, and pilot new approaches to tackle pressing climate vulnerabilities.

The Strategic Program for Climate Resilience under PPCR focused on climate-smart agriculture and food security, sustainable land management and climate-resilient landscapes, strengthening climate resilience of urban infractructures, and improving instituional capacity and coordination among government agencies in mainstreaming climate change adaptation in sector programs and projects.
