In the eighth of the series, the Transformational Change Learning Partnership (TCLP) Working Session on September 19, 2024, focused on “Transformative Learning to Maximize Climate Action.”

We discussed transformational learning approaches that support climate action. Although diverse learning approaches are needed to achieve the 1.5°C target, learning approaches that explicitly focus on systems thinking, critical depth, collective agency, and changed practices are more likely to create the kinds of transformational climate action required.

Distinguished professor Heila Lotz-Sisitka of Rhodes University in South Africa led the session. She holds the South African Research Chair in Transformative Social Learning and was the coordinator of the international T-Learning Transformative Knowledge Network. She laid the foundation for the TCLP community of practice to develop its collective understanding of, and practices associated with, learning for transformational change.

This virtual working session forms part of a new series of informal 60-minute workshops to collaborate on evidence, knowledge, and analysis that can drive transformational change in climate action and grow the TCLP’s community of practice. Follow the series here.

Presentation of Transformative Learning by Heila Lotz-Sisitka
09:15 AM - 09:55 AM
Discussion:
The speaker will work through five questions during this session:

1. What would 'effective' learning for climate action look like? How should this be supported and by whom?

2. How can we translate evaluation outcomes into transformative learning opportunities?

3. How would we know if this learning is transformative? for whom? and at what level?

4. What makes a good quality transformative learning process that is inclusive and oriented to shared climate actions?

5. How can we best facilitate and support transformative learning across scales and boundaries?
