Democratic Republic of Congo

Dem. Rep. of Congo, located in central sub-Saharan Africa, is bordered by Congo, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Angola. Due to its location within the River Congo Basin where floods frequently happen during equatorial heavy rain events, the country is highly exposed to flooding, landslides, and erosion. The northeast of the country is also extremely susceptible to droughts. Volcanic events are also common in the country.

INVESTING IN DRC

Picture of Democratic Republic of Congo

CIF's investment in the Democratic Republic of Congo is through its Forest Investment Program (FIP). In line with the country's Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) strategy, the $64-million investment plan aims to address the key drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, namely, illegal logging, household slash-and-burn agriculture, and the overexploitation of fuelwood. FIP financing is targeted at deforestation “hotspots” around the cities of Kinshasa, Kananga, Mbuji-Mayi, and Kisangani. Specific areas include afforestation/reforestation, such as agroforestry and assisted natural regeneration; dissemination of improved cook stoves and enhanced charcoal-making techniques; development of alternative energy sources; as well as the support of community-based capacity building on sustainable forest management.
