Seeding a Climate-resilient Future: Creating Markets for Irrigation Technologies in Niger

Agriculture is vital to Niger. It accounts for about 40 percent of the country’s GDP and it is the main employer of labor. Despite being a primary source of income and food for rural dwellers, agricultural productivity has remained low and less than 10 percent of land in the country is irrigated. Climate vulnerability remains high in Niger, given that 80 percent of farming was rainfed. In addition, private sector-led initiatives in Agriculture in Niger have been scarce.

Under the framework of Niger’s Strategic Program for Climate Resilience, the Niger Irrigation Project was created to test new small-scale irrigation techniques through the private sector that would engender beneficiary acceptance and promote sustainable agriculture, while creating conditions for private sector involvement in the agricultural sector in Niger. 

This Climate Delivery Lab will convene private sector irrigation experts, representatives of the government of Niger, sector experts, and climate change specialists to discuss the main challenges faced in seeding a climate resilient future for Niger through sustainable irrigation technologies. 

This Climate Delivery Lab is part of challenge accepted: Tackling Delivery Challenges in Climate Action, a learning event series co-hosted by the Climate Investment funds (CIF) and the Global Delivery Initiative (GDI)
