Cambodia, located in Southeast Asia, is bordered by Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Gulf of Thailand. The country is vulnerable to floods and droughts. Prolonged monsoon rains often lead to recurrent floods along the Mekong River and its tributaries, and from the Tonle Sap Lake. Due to poor management, access, and storage of existing water resources, as well as delays or the early ending of the monsoon rains and erratic rainfall, Cambodia also suffers from droughts.
INVESTING IN CAMBODIA
CIF’s investments in Cambodia are through its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR), Scaling up Renewable Energy Program (SREP), Forest Investment Program (FIP) and Clean Technology Fund (CTF) to accelerate action in priority areas.
The country’s $88-million PPCR investment plan is aimed at building institutional capacity to incorporate climate resilience into development plans and climate-proof critical water management systems, agriculture, as well as rural and urban infrastructures.
Its $30-million SREP investment plan is supporting an extensive, multiscale solar energy development program, as well as a biomass power project, policy support, and public awareness efforts.
Finally, Cambodia’s FIP investment plan is serving as a roadmap for improving natural resource management and promoting sustainable production forests.
Through the CIF-Technical Assistance Facility, over $700,000 was programmed for technical assistance activities in 2021. The programs covered an array of sectors such as mitigation and adaptation activities to support green and resilient Covid-19 recovery in the region, supporting climate resilient agriculture systems, and advancing the circular economy on marien plastics in the region.
